30yo Man Charged With Attempting To Rape 84yo Woman In NYC Park
A violent daytime attack in Manhattan’s Lower East Side has intensified concerns about public safety after a 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape an 84-year-old woman inside a park restroom.
Authorities say the incident unfolded around 2:50 p.m. on March 11 at Sara D. Roosevelt Park, a busy public space frequented by residents and tourists. According to a criminal complaint, the suspect, identified as Ian Grandison, forced his way into a restroom stall where the elderly victim was present. He allegedly knocked her to the ground and attempted to sexually assault her, escalating the situation in a manner that investigators describe as both brazen and calculated.
The attack was interrupted by a bystander who intervened before it could progress further. That individual not only pulled the suspect away from the victim but also captured a photograph as he fled the scene.
The image would later prove critical. When police located Grandison roughly six hours later at his apartment in Tribeca, they presented him with the photo. According to the complaint, he acknowledged his identity without hesitation.
The arrest has drawn heightened attention to safety conditions in the neighborhood, particularly given the timing and location of the alleged crime. Witnesses and locals expressed unease that such an incident could occur in broad daylight within a public park. Visitors described a shift in perception, noting that spaces typically assumed to be safe during daytime hours may require greater vigilance.
Investigators also linked Grandison to a prior incident earlier in the month. On March 4, he is accused of following a woman for several minutes before confronting her on Worth Street.
The complaint alleges he physically restrained her and attempted to force a kiss before she managed to escape. As in the later case, the victim documented the encounter by taking a photograph, which authorities say matches the suspect’s appearance during the park attack.
That earlier interaction, combined with the March 11 incident, has strengthened the case against him. Prosecutors have charged Grandison with attempted rape, attempted sexual abuse, and stalking. He is currently being held on $300,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 15.
