Former Soccer Star Responds To USWS Captain Interview
Alexi Lalas, a retired men’s professional soccer star, recently spoke out in disagreement with U.S. Women’s Soccer team captain Lindsey Horan over her harsh comments about American soccer fans. In an interview with The Athletic, Horan claimed American soccer fans are “not smart” and “don’t understand the game” like fans in other countries, specifically mentioning France.
Lalas took to Twitter to express his thoughts on Horan’s comments, stating that the U.S. Women’s team seemed to be “turning off” both non-soccer fans and dedicated followers with their attitude. He mocked Horan’s approach as a “bold strategy,” especially during a difficult time for the women’s team.
The former soccer star went on to praise American soccer fans, claiming they are “arguably some of the most educated, interesting, and well-rounded in the game.” He argued that because soccer is not the dominant sport in the U.S., fans have had to actively seek and discover the game, both domestically and internationally. This has given them a unique appreciation and understanding of the sport compared to other countries.
So, not satisfied with already turning off many Americans who don’t watch soccer, evidently the #USWNT has now set their sights on turning off many Americans who do watch soccer. Bold strategy. https://t.co/oBHEDTglj4

Lalas also pointed out that American soccer fans are exposed to a wider range of styles, leagues, and players due to the country’s diverse culture. This has resulted in a more diverse and knowledgeable soccer “palette” for American fans compared to other soccer-centric countries. He believes this is a positive aspect of American soccer culture and sets fans apart in terms of their understanding and appreciation of the game.
During her interview, Horan did acknowledge the criticism the U.S. Women’s team has received for their outside focus, which has included activism. She stated that if the team is not performing well on the field, they can expect to face criticism regarding their priorities and where they are focusing their energy.
The U.S. Women’s team has been at the center of attention in recent years for their vocal activism, especially surrounding issues like equal pay and LGBTQ+ rights. While the team’s dedication to using their platform for social change has gained their support in some circles, it has also drawn criticism from others who believe they are too focused on off-field issues.
I actually think American soccer fans are arguably some of the most educated, interesting, and well-rounded in the game. In a country where soccer isn’t king, American soccer fans have often had to seek and discover the game, domestically and internationally. This proactive…

Many believe the team’s focus should be solely on their performance on the field and that their outspoken nature has been a distraction from their game. Horan’s comments have only fueled these beliefs, especially coming from the team’s captain. Fans have expressed disappointment in her statements and questioned her loyalty to American soccer fans.
Horan has not yet responded to the backlash, but the controversy has brought the issue of the U.S. Women’s team’s activism to the forefront once again. While they continue to dominate in the world of women’s soccer, their approach to using their platform for social change has divided opinions and may continue to do so in the future.
