After Threatening To Close Churches NYC Mayor Is Giving Muslims 500,000 Meals
In late March New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio threatened churches that if they dare defy the state at home order he would close churches permanently.
“A small number of religious communities, specific churches, and specific synagogues, are unfortunately not paying attention to this guidance even though it’s so widespread,” the New York Democrat said Friday at his daily press briefing.
“I want to say to all those who are preparing for the potential of religious services this weekend: If you go to your synagogue, if you go to your church and attempt to hold services after having been told so often not to, our enforcement agents will have no choice but to shut down those services,” he added.
“If that does not happen, they will take additional action up to the point of fines and potentially closing the building permanently,” he said.
However, for Ramadan, the mayor, who claims the city is in a financial crisis is giving out 500,000 free Hala meals.
The city is going to distribute 400,000 meals at 32 specific Department of Education sites in areas where there are “large Muslim communities.” The other 100,000 will be distributed in partnership with local Muslim organizations.
“One of Ramadan’s most noble callings is to feed the hungry. And it’s a crucial part of how the holiday is celebrated, to remember to be there for those in need,” de Blasio said at a press briefing on Thursday. “And that is now harder than ever.”
“Obviously, people can’t go to their mosques,” he continued. “In fact, mosques have often been a place that those who were hungry, those who were poor, would know they could go during Ramadan to break the fast.”
“They knew there would always be a meal there for them. That’s not going to be true in this season. So we want to, the city of New York wants to, support this community as we’re supporting all communities,” he added:
As Muslim New Yorkers prepare to start the holy month of Ramadan tonight, Mayor Bill de Blasio says the city is taking steps to support the Muslim community with Halal food programs.

De Blasio also announced they are supporting all communities, and is creating a Kosher food program.
“We want to respect all the people, all the faiths of New York City,” he said. “This is part of what makes New York City so great–that we have that mutual respect. Any New Yorker needs food, it will always be there for you during this crisis. Your city will provide,” he said. “There’s no question.”
Funny I don’t remember the open arms during Easter. I’m not knocking the city giving out food but where was the city during Easter? It would have been nice if instead of threatening to permanently close churches, they set up distribution points to give out Easter dinner, or Passover meals, just like they are giving out meals for Ramadan.
