AOC Shows Empty Understanding of SCOTUS – Watch
In a recent interview, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) suggested that she does not know of any checks on the Supreme Court and that there was nothing balancing out their power, This is a disturbing revelation, as it shows that one of the most powerful members of Congress is not familiar with the basic structure of our government.
AOC said that she “truly” believes justices should have their power limited, even though no federal official has unlimited power.
“The courts, if they were to proceed without any check on their power, without any balance on their power, then we will start to see an undemocratic and, frankly, dangerous authoritarian expansion of power in the Supreme Court, which is what we are seeing now, from the overturning of abortion rights, to the ruling that discrimination and, frankly, stripping the full personhood and dignity of LGBTQ people in the United States,” she claimed.
“These are the types of rulings that signal a dangerous creep towards authoritarianism and centralization of power in the court,” she claimed. “In fact, we have members of the court themselves, with Justice Elena Kagan, saying that the court is beginning to assume the power of a legislature.”
The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United States, and its decisions are final. However, there are some checks on the Court’s power. One check is that Congress can pass laws that overturn Supreme Court decisions. Another check is that the president can appoint new justices to the Court.
AOC’s comments suggest that she is not aware of these checks on the Court’s power. This is a serious concern, as it means that she may not be able to effectively represent her constituents on issues related to the Supreme Court.
Take a look at this post to see AOC at her best/worst:
