Cali Dem Ends Congressional Campaign for Surprising Reason – Watch
A California Democrat has suspended his congressional campaign, citing a “lack of joy.”
Aditya Pai, a 45th Congressional District candidate who sought to win over the district represented by Rep. Michelle Steel (R-CA), claimed in a message to his supporters that his 2024 effort is “going well” but found his “heart is not quite in it.”
“I’m writing to announce the suspension of my congressional campaign, Pai for Congress. The reason is simple: a lack of joy,” Pai said in a statement to supporters. “Life is short. I believe one should enjoy their work. For the past four months, I have not enjoyed mine.”
“And were I fortunate enough to be elected, I am now certain, I would be unhappy in Congress. I didn’t know that four months ago. I know that now,” Pai added, according to The Hill.
Pai is a 31-year-old trial attorney who was born in Bombay, India, and moved to Southern California at the age of 8 with his parents. The main issues in his campaign included fighting corruption in Washington, D.C., codifying Roe v. Wade, lowering the cost of housing, boosting small businesses, and encouraging more legal immigration.
The primaries are set to take place in California in March. Democrats are hoping to flip several GOP-held seats in the state, including the district held by two-term Steel, as part of a strategy to retake the House, according to the Associated Press.
“My pursuit of office ends today,” Pai said in his message on Thursday. “And I am now actively looking for new ways to contribute that are more aligned with who I am. I still cherish what Justice Brandeis called the highest office. I achieved it 10 years ago: United States citizen.”
Pai said he loves the subject matter of politics, law, policy, and government, and he also loves helping people. However, he said he does not enjoy the “life of a politician.”
“I don’t enjoy the fundraising, the constant travel, the negative attacks, and the ever-present media scrutiny,” Pai said. “And were I fortunate enough to be elected, I am now certain, I would be unhappy in Congress.”
Aditya Pai ends his campaign in #ca45 – NOT because the campaign isn't going well (it is, he insists) but because he's just not feeling it anymore.
