Cue Western Soundtrack…A New Sheriff’s in Florida and They Are Moms
There’s a new sheriff in town and she’s a mom.
An emerging political committee started in Florida by a conservative parental rights advocacy group is gaining momentum and power. It’s called “Moms for Liberty.”
This group started just a year and a half ago but already has over 100,000 members. And they just scored their first major contribution from Publix heiress Julie Fancelli.
She is the daughter of Publix Super Markets founder George Jenkins, and she donated $50,000 to Moms for Liberty in June.
This money is already being directed to some candidates who are running for local school boards, including several who have the official endorsement of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Tina Descovish is the co-founder of the group and also chairs the Florida PAC.
She said in an interview, “The fact donors are realizing it’s important, and we’re capable of making an impact, is amazing.”
It’s no coincidence that Moms for Liberty works directly with Gov. DeSantis. What is being focused on a local level with school boards right now could gear up for a national spotlight in the near future.
This ground-level movement is the new political power scheme. It has gained popularity since the COVID-19 pandemic. What students are being taught in the classroom has risen to be a major value in political platforms.
This was highlighted by Virginia GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who tapped into parental frustration en route to his election last year.
Rep. Charlie Crist (D-Fla.), who is running for governor in Florida, tried to counter DeSantis’ plan on Wednesday by endorsing a slate of school board candidates “dedicated to keeping politics out of the classroom, protecting our students’ freedom to learn, and truly defending parental rights.”
Good luck with that, Crist…You’re about to meet the new sheriffs in the state: Moms protecting their kids.
