FDNY Gives Update After Speech Incident
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) has recently been under scrutiny after some of its members allegedly jeered and chanted for former President Donald Trump during a promotion ceremony last week. The incident, which occurred at a Brooklyn church, caused controversy and raised concerns over the department’s professionalism.
According to reports, FDNY Chief of Department John Hodgens sent out a fiery email to high-ranking FDNY officials last week, stating that the department’s Bureau of Investigation and Trials (BITS) would investigate members who were caught on video participating in the jeering and chants. The email also mentioned that those who came forward would be better off than those who had to be “hunted down.”
This news has caused an outcry from FDNY’s rank and file, as well as the public. Many have accused the department of overreacting and creating a “mountain out of a molehill.” This sentiment was echoed by attorney Louis Gelormino, who offered to represent any firefighters facing disciplinary action pro bono. Gelormino stated that the incident was a “smattering” of boos and chants and that nobody was being “hunted down.”
The FDNY has since clarified its stance and denies that there is an ongoing investigation or hunt for members involved in the incident. The department spokesperson stated that there are ongoing conversations with members about decorum during department events, stressing the importance of upholding the core values of the FDNY. However, the spokesperson did acknowledge that there may have been a breach of department regulations, but this is not a political issue.
Attorney Gelormino has commended FDNY for softening its language and believes that both Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh and Attorney General Letitia James will look like the bigger people if they handle the situation amicably. Gelormino also stated that he stands by his offer to defend FDNY members if the situation changes.
Last year, FDNY Local 2507 advised members to immediately ask for a union representative if approached by a BITS officer, citing concerns that investigators were trying to provoke confrontations that result in disciplinary action. Fire Commissioner Kavanagh has also faced criticisms during her tenure, with former top chiefs requesting demotion due to her policies.
According to sources, James was invited to the event by the new FDNY chaplain, Pamela Holmes, who was also being honored at the ceremony. Holmes and James are reportedly friends, and James’ office has stated that her respect for the brave men and women of the FDNY will not diminish due to the incident.
James, who is no stranger to high-profile lawsuits, recently made headlines when she successfully sued former President Trump for $350 million and former NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre for $5 million. Her presence at the ceremony has raised questions from FDNY members and the public, with some questioning the appropriateness of a political figure attending a department event.
The FDNY has a long history of being highly respected and praised for their bravery and dedication. Many, including Gelormino, believe that this incident should not overshadow the incredible work that the members of the FDNY do every day. Gelormino stated that the department needs to do a better job of reconnecting with its rank and file and addressing any concerns or issues that may arise.
As the investigation into the promotion ceremony continues, it is hoped that the FDNY can move past this incident and continue to serve and protect the people of New York City.
