Georgia Grand Jury Sworn In for Trump Case – Watch
A new grand jury was sworn in on Tuesday in Fulton County, Georgia, to consider criminal charges against former President Donald Trump and his allies for their alleged role in trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
The members of the new grand jury were picked over the course of a three-hour selection process in front of Judge Robert McBurney in Atlanta, according to ABC News.
The grand jury is expected to hear evidence from witnesses and review documents related to Trump’s phone calls with Georgia election officials, as well as his attempts to pressure them to “find” votes that would have overturned his defeat in the state.
The investigation is being led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, a Democrat. Willis has said that she is considering charges against Trump for solicitation of election fraud, conspiracy to commit election fraud, and making false statements to state officials.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has called the investigation a “witch hunt.” He has also filed a lawsuit to try to block the grand jury from hearing evidence against him.
The new grand jury is expected to meet for several months before issuing a report. If the grand jury finds probable cause that Trump committed a crime, it can issue an indictment, which would then send the case to trial.
The potential charges against Trump are significant, but it is important to note that he has not been charged with any crimes at this time. The grand jury will have to weigh the evidence and decide whether there is enough to support an indictment.
The most serious case that Trump faces criminal charges in involves his retention of classified national defense documents that were recovered during an FBI raid last August after the former president repeatedly refused to hand over all the documents that federal officials sought back from him.
The investigation into Trump’s role in the 2020 election is one of several ongoing probes into his conduct. Trump is also facing a criminal investigation in New York and a civil investigation by the House Select Committee on the January 6th Attack.
