Gov. Gavin Newsom and Vice President Harris Have Some Interesting Days Ahead
It could get pretty nasty for these two California politicians. California Gov. Gavin Newsom looks like he has his eye on the White House in 2024. And according to some well-connected California Democrat insiders, Newsom plans to throw his hat into the ring if Joe Biden bows out from a second term.
This means that the Governor is willing to go toe to toe against another California Democrat, Vice President Kamala Harris.
California Governor Gavin Newsom is “undeniably, unequivocally” planning to run for president in 2024 if President Biden chooses not to seek a second term, two individuals with knowledge of Newsom’s plans told TheWrap.
“After this midterm election is over, he absolutely is going to announce that he is running for the presidency once Biden announces that he is not running,” a leading California fundraiser with close ties to the Newsom family told TheWrap. “No ifs, ands or buts. He will run if Biden does not.”
Newsom has been taking the spotlight of late because of his ongoing feud with Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. He has even challenged the Florida governor to a debate.
Newsom has also gotten a lot of press for being outspoken in his pro-abortion campaign against pro-life GOP states. And it has been reported that Newsom is kicking into gear a fundraising machine and having meetings with “political consultants” who have “national election experience.”
According to CNBC, a Wall Street executive who raised money for Biden’s 2020 campaign met with Newsom in recent weeks. The governor has also been networking with Heather Podesta, a veteran DC lobbyist.
It will be interesting to see how Vice President Harris responds to all these moves by her Democratic “ally” in her own state. Things will likely heat up very quickly between these two very vocal candidates.
