Harris Secures Delegates Says Report
Today, let’s dive into the latest political development as Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough delegates to officially become the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee. This milestone comes as delegates prepare to cast their votes next month, solidifying her position as the party’s candidate.
Harris, who had to withdraw from the 2020 presidential race before the voting began, will likely become the nominee without having earned a single vote from Democratic voters in this cycle. The Associated Press reported that Harris had garnered the backing of more than the required 1,976 delegates, ensuring her nomination.
The swift turn of events started on Sunday when President Joe Biden announced the end of his re-election campaign, citing his struggle to gain traction against former President Donald Trump in the polls.
Harris immediately launched her campaign, and within days, she secured the delegate support needed to clinch the nomination.
Delegates, who are not bound to Harris, will cast their votes during the first week of August, making her nomination official. In her address on Monday, Harris spoke about her campaign and her plans to unify the Democratic Party. She drew on her extensive background in law and politics, emphasizing her experience as a prosecutor and attorney general in California.
“As many of you know, before I was elected as vice president, before I was elected as United States senator, I was the elected attorney general, as I’ve mentioned, of California, and before that I was a courtroom prosecutor. In those roles, I took on perpetrators of all kinds,” Harris said. “Predators who abused women. Fraudsters who ripped off consumers. Cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So hear me when I say I know Donald Trump’s type.”
President Biden called into the meeting Harris attended, expressing his full support for her campaign. Despite the mounting calls for his resignation over concerns about his mental fitness, Biden assured that he would actively campaign for Harris while continuing his duties as president.
Harris’s rapid ascent to the nomination is unprecedented, especially considering she did not go through the primary voting process this cycle.
Her campaign will now focus on rallying the party and preparing for the general election against a formidable opponent in Donald Trump.
