Harris Speaks With High School Students About Leadership
Hello everyone, let’s talk about a recent moment that’s causing some buzz in the political sphere, involving Vice President Kamala Harris and a high school band. Harris, now officially the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee, was out on the campaign trail with her running mate, Governor Tim Walz, when she stopped to speak with a group of students. But instead of inspiring, her speech has left many scratching their heads.

Here’s what went down: In a video clip from the event, Harris is seen addressing the band with what some have described as an overly simplistic and condescending tone. She spoke slowly, enunciating each word as if she were talking to much younger children, rather than high school students. “Our country is counting on you,” she said, nodding with every word and using her hands for emphasis.
“All of you. You are leaders. By the very fact that you all are here in this room, doing what you do at this incredible school, doing it as one big team, understanding all the different parts that fit together to create a team.”
While Harris might have intended to be motivational, the delivery didn’t land well with everyone. Critics were quick to point out that her communication style might be part of the reason her campaign hasn’t placed her front and center as much as they could have. Conservative commentator Greg Price tweeted, “Kamala explains the concept of how teams work together to a high school band as if they are 5 years old.” Others, like The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro, remarked on her use of hand gestures, suggesting that when they start, “you know it’s gonna be baaaaaaaaaad.”

The reactions didn’t stop there. Some online commentators even sympathized with Governor Walz, imagining how tough it must be to listen to such “nonsense” and still have to act as though it made sense. This incident adds to the ongoing narrative about Harris’s public speaking skills—or lack thereof—and the challenges her campaign faces in connecting with voters.
What’s interesting here is that Harris is gearing up for her first major interview since becoming the de facto nominee. This interview, set to air on CNN with Dana Bash, will be pre-taped and, notably, will include her running mate, Tim Walz. The decision to have Walz by her side has already sparked criticism, with some questioning why Harris wouldn’t face the media alone, especially at such a crucial point in the campaign.

It’s a real mystery why her handlers never let her speak without a script…pic.twitter.com/iS2p4gtTJx
