Hochul Discusses Subway Safety During Address
Governor Kathy Hochul took to social media on Sunday to pat herself on the back for her supposedly triumphant efforts in making New York City’s subway system safer. The timing couldn’t have been worse. As her self-congratulatory post made the rounds online, two horrifying incidents—one involving a woman burned alive and another where a man was fatally stabbed—were fresh in the headlines.
In her post on X, Hochul proudly proclaimed, “In March, I took action to make our subways safer for the millions of people who take the trains each day. Since deploying the @NationalGuardNY to support @NYPDnews and @MTA safety efforts and adding cameras to all subway cars, crime is going down, and ridership is going up.”

Now, let’s pause and unpack that. Cameras and National Guard presence might look good in a press release, but they clearly didn’t stop a sleeping woman from being burned alive on a subway train while her attacker reportedly sat there and watched. Nor did they prevent a violent stabbing spree in Queens that left one man dead and another permanently scarred.
Congressman Ritchie Torres (D-NY), no stranger to toeing the party line, couldn’t even keep quiet. He slammed Hochul’s tone-deaf timing, asking, “Has there ever been a more tone-deaf Governor in the history of New York?” Fair question, Congressman.
Two hours ago, Kathy Hochul took a victory lap for making subways “safer.” She congratulates herself on the same day two subway riders were stabbed in Queens (one in the face and one in the chest) and another was barbarically burned alive.

Country star John Rich also weighed in with biting sarcasm: “Thank you Kathy, you’ve done a bang-up job.” And Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) didn’t mince words either, pointing out the sheer audacity of Hochul’s victory lap amid such fresh bloodshed.
It’s worth asking: What world is Governor Hochul living in? Is she scrolling through carefully curated crime stats provided by aides instead of reading actual news headlines? Because the facts on the ground tell a very different story. Violent attacks in the subway system remain shockingly frequent, and commuters have every reason to keep one hand on their pepper spray and the other clutching the nearest pole.
Hochul’s claim that crime is “going down” reeks of bureaucratic spin. Cameras don’t stop crime—they record it. And having National Guard troops stand around in fatigues might make for good photo ops, but it doesn’t seem to be making a dent in the violence.
