House Oversight Dems Reopen Investigation
House Democrats are once again gearing up for a new investigation targeting former President Donald Trump, this time zeroing in on a 2020 Department of Justice inquiry related to an alleged $10 million bribe from Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi.
This latest probe, sparked by a Washington Post report from a month ago, claims that DOJ officials halted an investigation into whether Trump had received the money in the lead-up to the 2016 election, and whether it influenced his decision to inject a similar amount into his campaign at that time.
Trump’s 2024 campaign, however, isn’t playing along. Campaign spokesman Stephen Cheung dismissed the new investigation as just another baseless attack on the former president, labeling it “Fake News” and reiterating that the original DOJ investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing.
“None of the allegations or insinuations being reported on have any basis in fact,” Cheung declared, accusing the media of being manipulated by what he called “Deep State Trump-haters” who continuously peddle false narratives.
The Washington Post’s story claims that the DOJ, led by acting U.S. Attorney Michael Sherwin in 2020, chose to close the case due to insufficient evidence. However, the report highlighted that the FBI had been investigating the potential $10 million bribe, with some alleging that top officials blocked further pursuit of key records.
Notably, the investigation was initially led by none other than former FBI Director Robert Mueller, the same figure behind the Trump-Russia investigation, a probe that Trump has long labeled a “witch hunt.”
This new Democratic investigation comes amid a broader political battle. While Democrats remain in the minority in the House, limiting their investigative power, they are doubling down on efforts to probe Trump, especially as the former president campaigns for another term.
Meanwhile, Republicans have been hammering away at President Joe Biden with their own investigations. The GOP recently released an impeachment report detailing alleged foreign payments to Biden’s family, which Democrats promptly countered with a defense memo.
Once again, it’s clear that Trump’s political battles are far from over whether it’s accusations of corruption, “witch hunts,” or the relentless back-and-forth between House Republicans and Democrats, the former president finds himself in the middle of another storm, one that his campaign is eager to dismiss as part of the broader, ongoing campaign against him.
