J. Lo Speaks At Harris Event
Jennifer Lopez is taking a strong stand in the 2024 election season, publicly denouncing former President Donald Trump after a comedian’s comment at his Madison Square Garden rally insulted Puerto Rico. During Trump’s event, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage,” sparking outrage from Puerto Rican celebrities and beyond.
Lopez, along with other prominent figures like Bad Bunny, Ricky Martin, and Aubrey Plaza, voiced her disapproval of the insult, which has intensified support for Trump’s opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris.
At a Harris rally in Las Vegas, J-Lo delivered an impassioned, 15-minute speech condemning Trump and his divisive rhetoric. “At Madison Square Garden, he reminded us who he really is and how he really feels,” she stated. “It wasn’t just Puerto Ricans that were offended that day. It was every Latino in this country. It was humanity and anyone of decent character.”
Lopez used the opportunity to connect with her audience personally, emphasizing her Puerto Rican heritage and reminding the crowd that Puerto Ricans are American citizens. In a memorable line, she declared, “You can’t spell American without Rican,” drawing enthusiastic applause from the crowd.
Lopez also highlighted Harris’s policies, particularly the Democrat’s plans to extend the child tax credit, which Lopez described as “about helping you get ahead … It’s about us. All of us. No matter what we look like, who we love or who we worship or where we’re from.” Her support underscores the narrative of unity that Harris’s campaign is promoting, standing in stark contrast, according to Lopez, to Trump’s “consistent work to divide us.”
Lopez’s comments come at a crucial time in the election, as polls show Harris and Trump locked in a tight race with only days until the November 5 election. Puerto Ricans, though not voting in the presidential election from the island, hold significant influence in key states, and Lopez’s endorsement could sway voters who are on the fence.
Outside of the political arena, Lopez has also made headlines for her reaction to questions about her former boyfriend Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is currently embroiled in serious legal trouble. During a fan autograph signing at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles, Lopez abruptly ended her interaction with fans when someone asked her for comments on allegations against Combs, who faces charges related to racketeering and sex trafficking. In footage from the event, Lopez’s demeanor shifted immediately, and she left with her entourage as fans pleaded with her to stay.
The singer’s complicated history with Combs has resurfaced amid his recent legal issues. Lopez and Combs were one of Hollywood’s most publicized couples in the late ’90s, dating for two years and enduring a series of scandals, including a 1999 nightclub shooting that led to their arrests (though charges were later dropped).
Recently, Lopez’s ex-husband Ojani Noa claimed in an interview that her relationship with Combs played a role in the dissolution of their marriage. Noa described how Lopez’s collaboration with Combs on her debut album, On the 6, put strain on their relationship, ultimately leading to their brief marriage’s end.
