Leaders Of Democracies Around The World Are Not Happy With Twitter After Trump Ban & Some Countries May Take Action, ‘This Should Be Decided By Citizens Not…
Leaders of Democracies from around the world are voicing their concern over the growing power of Silicon Valley after President Trump de-platformed.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is by no means a fan of President Trump through her top spokesman said Twitter blocking President Trump is “problematic.”
During a press conference, Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert said, “The right to freedom of opinion is of fundamental importance. Given that, the chancellor considers it problematic that the president’s accounts have been permanently suspended.”
That’s coming from a leader of a country whose free speech laws are far stricter than the ones in America.
EU and British officials voiced their concern after President Trump was banned and are considering taking action to regulate social media countries.
The UK’s Health Secretary Matt Hancock (formerly Culture Secretary) said that tech giants are “taking editorial decisions” that raise a “very big question.”
“That’s clear because they’re choosing who should and shouldn’t have a voice on their platform,” Hancock told the BBC.
France’s junior minister for European Union Affairs wants to impose stricter regulations on private tech companies.
“This should be decided by citizens, not by a CEO,” Beaune told Bloomberg TV this week. “There needs to be public regulation of big online platforms.”
The Russian opposition leader Alexei Nava tweeted, “This precedent will be exploited by the enemies of freedom of speech around the world. In Russia as well. Every time when they need to silence someone, they will say: ‘this is just common practice, even Trump got blocked on Twitter.'”
There was a time when liberals in the USA would have fought against this tooth and nail but, instead, they are cheering it on.
Below is a New York Times columnist saying she is worried about how a few people can be in charge of what we see but as long as they censor those she disagrees with she is ok with it.
Look at what this liberal NYT columnist is saying.
She’s saying she’s “disturbed” at how “dangerous” it is “to have a handful of callow young tech titans in charge of who has a megaphone,” but as long as they use that power to censor her adversaries, not her allies, she’s happy: https://t.co/bh7XDUmVL5

As quoted by Glenn Greenwald, Europe has been pushing back against big tech and now may push to split up platforms if they don’t comply with the new guidelines.
For those who didn’t see, leaders of democracies around the world — Germany, France, Mexico — are warning that this Silicon Valley censorship poses a grave threat to democracy. They oppose monopoly power over politics.
