Looks Like Russian Warlord Yevgeny Prigozhin Has Paid for Mutiny Against Putin – Watch
Russian warlord Yevgeny Prigozhin, who was reportedly plotting to overthrow President Vladimir Putin, has been killed in a plane crash. The Russian government said that all 10 people on the plane, including its crew members, died in the crash, according to a report from The Financial Times.
Prigozhin was a close ally of Putin and the head of the Wagner Group, a private military contractor that has been accused of carrying out atrocities in countries such as Syria and Libya. He was also the subject of US sanctions for his alleged role in interfering in the 2016 US presidential election.
According to reports, Prigozhin’s plane crashed in the Republic of Karelia, in northwestern Russia, on Wednesday. All 13 people on board were killed.
The cause of the crash is not yet known, but some reports have suggested that it may have been sabotage.
While Russian officials said that Prigozhin was on the passenger list, it was not immediately clear if he was in the aircraft.
The 62-year old paramilitary leader, once a close confidant of Putin’s, led a short-lived mutiny against the Russian government in late June after spending months vocally criticizing his country’s top brass. His forces, known for their particularly violent battlefield tactics, spearheaded a number of battles for Russia on the Ukrainian front.
An apparent deal was made between Prigozhin and Russian President Vladimir Putin after the aborted coup, which was meant to see the Wagner Group leader and his forces relocate to Belarus, with Prigozhin himself pledging to leave Russia for good. It is unclear why the aircraft he was reportedly in was near Moscow.
“An investigation has been launched into the Embraer plane crash that occurred tonight in the Tver region. According to the passenger list, among them is the name and surname of Yevgeny Prigozhin,” Rosaviatsia said.
Unconfirmed media reports suggest the business jet belonged to Prigozhin, but it was not immediately clear if he had boarded the flight.
