Mexico Considering Legal Action After Incident At ICE Raid
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Tuesday that her administration is weighing legal action in the United States following the death of a Mexican migrant during an immigration raid in Camarillo, California.
Jaime Alanís Garcia, a worker at Glass House Farms, died after falling approximately 30 feet from a rooftop during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation on July 10. According to his family, Garcia was possibly fleeing federal agents when the incident occurred. He sustained fatal injuries, including a broken neck and skull, and later died in the hospital.
Sheinbaum confirmed that Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is reviewing the case and considering a formal legal complaint in U.S. courts. “It is very unfortunate that this happened,” Sheinbaum stated during a press conference. “All our solidarity and support go to the family, and there must not be another case like this one.”
Cool. I think there are some American families who should have a word with an attorney if we’re playing this game. Let’s start with drug deaths. https://t.co/l1OPZud6ys

Garcia’s death occurred during one of at least two large-scale immigration enforcement operations in Southern California that day. Federal agents reportedly encountered resistance from protesters at the scene.
Garcia’s family condemned the raid as a chaotic and fear-inducing operation, noting that several workers were detained and others traumatized. “Jaime was not just a farmworker, he was a provider, and a human being who deserved dignity,” the family posted on social media.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) disputed claims that Garcia was being chased at the time of his fall. “This man was not in and has not been in CBP or ICE custody,” DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin stated. “Although he was not being pursued by law enforcement, this individual climbed up to the roof of a greenhouse and fell 30 feet.” DHS reported that a medivac was called immediately to provide emergency medical assistance.
President Sheinbaum also shared updated figures on deportations: since June 6, 435 individuals have been repatriated from the U.S. to Mexico. Between January 20 and July 14, a total of 1,427 people were deported specifically due to immigration raids. Overall, 75,341 people were repatriated during that period—68,790 of them Mexican nationals, and 6,551 foreign nationals sent via Mexico.
The Mexican government’s review of Garcia’s death remains ongoing.
