MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Says Christians Using Christianity to Oppose Abortion Are ‘Perverting the Gospel’
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough knows that he’s not a bible scholar, but doesn’t know enough to stay clear of making inane statements about what is in it.
He said on the Friday show that he may be a “backsliding Baptist,” but he knows enough to say Jesus Christ never talked about abortion and that American Christians are committing heresy by using Christianity to oppose abortion.
Scarborough, on a ”Morning Joe” panel, said, “I come from a pro-life area. Most people I grew up with consider themselves pro-life and so many of them have checked out on the radicalism,” he said. “The radicalism in Michigan, when you have someone running for governor saying a 14-year-old girl being raped is a perfect example of why she needs to carry the rapist’s baby and have the state compel her to have a forced birth, why 10-year-old girls are fleeing the state of Michigan.”
MSNBC then showed a video of South Carolina state Senator Katrina Shealy, who is Republican, voicing her opposition to a strict pro-life bill.
“And let me just say, as a Southern Baptist, I grew up reading the Bible, maybe a backsliding Baptist, but I still know the Bible. Jesus never once talked about abortion, never once, and it was happening back in ancient times. It was happening during his time. Never once mentioned it. And for people perverting the gospel of Jesus Christ down to one issue, it’s heresy,” Scarborough said after the clip.
Joe then challenges Christians to do something they haven’t done in a long time and open their Bibles.
Ok…let’s do that. Matthew 19:14 shows Jesus’ love for children when He said, “Let the children come to me.” In Matthew 18:6, Jesus said that if anyone caused a child to stumble, it would be better for them to have a millstone tied around their neck and be thrown into the sea.
And in Psalm 139, a passage Christians believe was inspired by the very Spirit of Jesus Christ, it says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
Christians who use their Christianity are perverting the gospel of Jesus Christ and committing heresy? I don’t think so, Joe.
