They Are Going To Cave: Rhino GOP Senator Hints They Are Working On A Gun Control Bill With The Dems
During an appearance on Meet The Press, Republican Senator (rhino) Pat Toomey (who is not running for re-election) announced that they are working on a bi-partisan gun control bill.
Toomey said that the House gun control bill is a “nonstarter” in the Senate.
“You are not going to get 60 votes with legislation that requires when a father wants to sell his gun to his son to have to get a background check,” Toomey said on a special edition of “Meet the Press.”
“My focus has always been: Make it more difficult for people that we all agree should not have firearms, make it more difficult for them to get firearms. That’s violent criminals, the dangerous, mentally ill.”
In 2013, Toomey’s expanding background check bill failed after falling short the necessary 60 votes.
It appears that rhino’s are joining with Democrats to create a bill in the Senate because Democrat Senator Patrick Murphy followed Toomey on Meet the Press.
“You are going to have to make some reasonable accommodations if you want 10 Republican votes, and I’m already talking to Republicans who are not unwilling to sit down at the table,” Murphy said.
“Our best chance to get something passed is universal background checks. I think the theory of the case is: Once we convince Republicans that the sky doesn’t fall for you politically when you support a reasonable expansion of something like background checks, you can move onto other interventions.”
Senator Chris Murphy also signaled that Democrats are not willing to use the filibuster (yet) to pass gun control.
