Now Even a Dem Texas Mayor Sends Migrants on a ‘One-Way Bus Ticket to Sanctuary’
The Democratic mayor of El Paso, Texas, has chartered five buses to take migrants to New York, Chicago, and Denver. The move comes as El Paso struggles to cope with an influx of migrants crossing the border from Mexico.
El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser said that the city is at a “breaking point” and that the buses are necessary to help alleviate the strain on resources.
“The city of El Paso only has so many resources, and we have come to… a breaking point right now,” Leeser said at a news conference.
Leeser said that the migrants on the buses are all going voluntarily and that they have been provided with food, water, and other necessities for the journey.
Previously, the Republican governors of Texas and Florida who sent migrants to blue cities were skewered by Democrats, who accused them of “playing politics with people’s lives.”
In August, there were nearly 233,000 migrant encounters at the southern border, the highest August on record, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said. That number marks a jump from under 184,000 encounters in July.
A number of major cities, particularly New York and Chicago, have been struggling with a migrant crisis as tens of thousands of newcomers show up on their doorstep.
New York City is struggling to metabolize more than 113,000 migrants who have shown up in the city since last spring, nearly 60,000 of whom are still being housed on the city’s budget.
Those who support Leeser’s decision say that it is a necessary step to help El Paso cope with the influx of migrants. They also point out that the migrants on the buses are all going voluntarily and that they have been provided with food, water, and other necessities for the journey.
Those who criticize Leeser’s decision say that it is unfair to send migrants to other cities without warning. They also argue that the move could strain resources in those cities.
Chicago is also facing a migrant crisis and is struggling to find long-term solutions. The country’s third-largest city has seen an influx of about 13,500 migrants recently and has already spent at least $250 million on the issue.
The federal government has already given Chicago and Illinois at least $ 8.5 million for the migrant crisis.
In Denver, migrants have also arrived by the hundreds in recent weeks. Denver has spent at least $23 million on recent migrant arrivals.
