Rep. Adam Schiff Faces $16M Fine for Russian Hoax – Watch
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) has filed a motion to censure, condemn, and fine her colleague Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) for his role in peddling the debunked Russia collusion hoax. The motion, which was filed on May 19, 2023, seeks to fine Schiff $16 million.
Luna says that amount is about half of the cost of the federal investigation into alleged Trump-Russia collusion, debunked by special counsel reports from Robert Mueller and John Durham.
“The GOP Conference agrees that Adam Schiff has betrayed the trust of the American people, purposely abused positions of extreme authority, lied continuously, and as such, must be held to account,” the lawmaker said in a statement. “Accordingly, the resolution requires Rep. Schiff to pay a $16 million dollar fine, half of the cost American taxpayers were forced to pay for the Russia hoax investigation.”
Luna’s motion alleges that Schiff “repeatedly made false and misleading statements” about the Russia investigation, and that he “knowingly and willfully” engaged in a “pattern of misconduct” that “undermined the integrity of the House of Representatives.”
The motion cites several specific examples of Schiff’s alleged misconduct, including:
- Schiff’s claim that he had seen “more than circumstantial evidence” of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
- Schiff’s repeated claims that the Trump campaign had “collaborated” with Russia to interfere in the 2016 election.
- Schiff’s unauthorized release of a classified memo that purported to show that the FBI had abused its surveillance powers in the Russia investigation.
Luna’s motion argues that Schiff’s actions “constituted a gross abuse of power” and that he should be held accountable for his “misconduct.” The motion also argues that the fine of $16 million is “a just and appropriate punishment” for Schiff’s actions.
Luna introduced another resolution last week to expel Schiff from Congress.
It is unclear whether Luna’s motion will be successful. However, the motion is a sign of the growing frustration among conservatives with Schiff’s role in the Russia investigation. Schiff has long been a vocal critic of President Trump, and he has been accused of using his position on the House Intelligence Committee to try to damage Trump politically.
