Rep. Shelia Jackson-Lee Makes Announcement
In a surprising and challenging announcement, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) revealed on Sunday that she has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This diagnosis comes at a critical time, as the House of Representatives faces election-year power struggles in its closely contested chamber. Jackson Lee, 74, is a senior member of the House Committees on the Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget.
“My adult life has been defined by my faith in God, my love for humanity, and my commitment to public service,” Jackson Lee wrote in a letter posted on X (formerly Twitter). “As a member of Congress, I’ve been honored to be one of the leaders in the fight for justice and equality for all; especially the disadvantaged and the dispossessed.
Today my fight is more personal, but I will approach it with the same faith and the same courage. My doctors have confirmed my diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. I am currently undergoing treatment to battle this disease that impacts tens of thousands of Americans every year.”

Despite her diagnosis, Jackson Lee expressed confidence in her medical team and their treatment plan. “I am confident that my doctors have developed the best possible plan to target my specific disease. The road ahead will not be easy, but I stand in faith that God will strengthen me,” she added. Jackson Lee also reaffirmed her commitment to working with Congressional leadership, including Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA), to serve the nation and be present for votes on critical legislation.
However, health challenges like Jackson Lee’s can significantly impact legislative dynamics. Historically, similar diagnoses have sidelined lawmakers at crucial times, complicating the legislative process for both parties. Last year, Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA) announced he had multiple myeloma, which temporarily reduced the Republican vote count during a contentious fight over the House Speaker position. In April, Representative Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ) revealed his own cancer diagnosis, and Representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD) recently announced his cancer is in remission.
The current balance of power in the House is particularly fragile. With five vacancies resulting from resignations and a death, Republicans hold a narrow 217-213 majority. In party-line votes, Speaker Mike Johnson can afford no more than one Republican defection. This tight margin means that any absence, including Jackson Lee’s potential absences due to treatment, could impact the passage of legislation.
Jackson Lee’s commitment to remain present for as many votes as possible is crucial for maintaining the Democratic caucus’s strength. However, her health situation introduces an element of uncertainty. The House’s slim margins mean that every vote counts, and any absence can shift the balance of power, even if temporarily. Johnson may find a small advantage if Jackson Lee is unable to attend all votes, potentially providing the GOP with a bit more flexibility.
As Jackson Lee faces her personal battle, her resilience and dedication to public service remain evident. Her fight against pancreatic cancer will undoubtedly be challenging, but her commitment to her constituents and her role in Congress remains steadfast. The political landscape, already fraught with tension and closely contested battles, will continue to evolve as lawmakers navigate these complex times.
