Savannah Guthrie’s Mother Missing
Savannah Guthrie is facing a deeply personal crisis after confirming that her mother, Nancy Guthrie, 84, is missing in Arizona, a development that prompted the longtime “Today” show anchor to step away from the NBC morning program as authorities escalate their search.
Guthrie, 54, was absent from Monday’s broadcast of “Today,” with Sheinelle Jones filling in alongside Craig Melvin during the 7 a.m. hour. During the show, a statement from Guthrie was read addressing the situation and thanking the public for its support as the search continues.
“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” the statement read. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.” Guthrie also urged anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, emphasizing the family’s reliance on the public as well as law enforcement during the investigation.
A spokesperson for the Guthrie family confirmed to The New York Post that the case is officially being treated as a missing persons investigation and that the family is working closely with authorities. The spokesperson reiterated the request for information and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of concern and prayers.
According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, Nancy Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in Catalina Foothills, a residential area north of Tucson. She was reported missing the following day. Authorities described the 84-year-old as a “vulnerable adult” who is “not of good physical health,” a factor that has intensified concern surrounding her disappearance.
At a press conference, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos revealed that a relative placed a 911 call around noon Sunday to report Nancy missing. Investigators took the unusual step of involving homicide detectives and conducting an extensive search of her home, a move officials acknowledged is not standard procedure in most missing-person cases.
“We’ve pretty much thrown everything at this as we can,” Nanos said, adding that the situation is “very concerning.” He noted that it is uncommon for the sheriff himself to be present at such scenes, underscoring the seriousness of the case. Authorities have stated there is “grave concern” for Nancy’s well-being as the search continues.
Nancy Guthrie has been a familiar presence to “Today” viewers over the years, making occasional guest appearances since her daughter joined the show in 2011. Savannah Guthrie’s absence comes just weeks after she returned to the program following vocal cord surgery, a recovery she publicly documented in an emotional on-air segment in January.
