Solving the Border Crisis: Johnson’s Letter to Biden
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, has called on President Joe Biden to take immediate executive action to address the ongoing crisis at the southern border.
In a letter sent to the White House on Thursday, Johnson expressed concern over the record number of illegal immigrants entering the country and urged the administration to take steps under existing law to get control of the situation.
The letter outlined a number of proposals for the president to consider, including ending the controversial policy of catch-and-release, which allows illegal immigrants to be released into the U.S. while awaiting their court proceedings.
Johnson also called for an end to the “exploitation” of parole authority, which allows certain undocumented individuals to remain in the country under special circumstances, and for the revival of asylum cooperation agreements with Mexico. Additionally, he urged Biden to ramp up the “expedited” removal of migrants who do not qualify for asylum and to resume construction of the border wall.

One of the more notable recommendations made by Johnson was for Biden to use Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which gives the president the power to block entry to foreigners deemed to be “detrimental” to U.S. interests. This, the House Speaker argued, would help the U.S. regain operational control of the border.
The letter comes as negotiations in the Senate continue to drag on, with lawmakers attempting to find a compromise on border security measures in exchange for aid to U.S. allies such as Ukraine. In recent weeks, Biden has expressed a willingness to make significant compromises on border security, stating that the system is “broken” and in need of repair. However, he has not yet received a response from Congress on this issue.
Johnson emphasized the urgency of the situation, citing data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection which shows that thousands of illegal immigrants are entering the country every day. He also highlighted the impact on local communities, with increased levels of fentanyl, human trafficking, and vulnerability to terrorist attacks.

In a statement on social media, Johnson reiterated his message to the president, stating that the House has already passed legislation to address the border crisis but the Senate has failed to take action. He ended his post by appealing to Biden directly, stating, “Border security starts with you. It’s time to take action today to secure the border.”
As the debate over border security continues to simmer in Congress, it remains to be seen how the Biden administration will respond to Johnson’s requests. However, with the situation at the southern border reaching critical levels, many are hoping for swift action to address the crisis and protect American citizens.
