Some Dems Hint Support for DHS Impeachment – Watch
Republicans in Congress have called for the impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. The GOP is accusing Mayorkas of undermining law enforcement activities at the southern border and of providing false and misleading testimony to Congress.
The latest call for impeachment comes from Rep. Pat Fallon (R–TX), who has introduced three articles of impeachment against the DHS secretary. The articles accuse Mayorkas of engaging in a pattern of conduct “incompatible with his duties,” providing false and misleading testimony to Congress, and “knowingly” slandering Border Patrol agents. Additionally, Rep. Andy Biggs (R–AZ) has introduced articles of impeachment against Mayorkas for “the systematic destruction of the geographical integrity of the United States of America.”
The accusations against Mayorkas have been backed up by Rep. Juan Vargas (D–CA), who has expressed interest in joining his Republican colleagues to impeach the DHS secretary. However, Vargas is pushing for impeachment for different reasons than GOP lawmakers. He is accusing Mayorkas of betraying local Democratic officials by allowing the construction of a pair of border walls in San Diego, a project that Mayorkas had previously vowed to halt.
The articles of impeachment have been referred to the House Judiciary Committee, and it’s unclear if or when they will be considered by the entire House. The DHS has said that Mayorkas has no plans to resign from his post, noting that the accusations against him do not meet the constitutional standard of high crimes and misdemeanors.
Republicans, however, remain adamant to impeach Mayorkas and have vowed to open impeachment inquiries into the DHS secretary if he doesn’t step down from office. It remains to be seen whether the GOP will be able to successfully impeach Mayorkas, as the Democrats maintain control of the Senate.
