Trump Holds Phone Call With Putin
In a stunning turn of events, former President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have reportedly reached a landmark agreement on an immediate ceasefire targeting energy and infrastructure in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
The nearly three-hour conversation between the two leaders signals what could be the first real breakthrough in ending a conflict that has ravaged Ukraine for over two years.
Trump, who shared details of the call on his TRUTH Social platform, described the conversation as “very good and productive.” He stated that beyond the ceasefire on energy and infrastructure, the two leaders discussed a broader “Contract for Peace” aimed at halting hostilities altogether.
Trump emphasized the urgent need to stop the loss of life, stating that both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “would like to see it end.”
The White House, in a follow-up statement, confirmed that negotiations for a more comprehensive ceasefire—including technical discussions on a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea—would begin immediately in the Middle East.
The statement pointed out that both Trump and Putin acknowledged the “blood and treasure” lost in the conflict and agreed that resources would be better directed toward the well-being of their respective nations’ citizens. Furthermore, the potential for strengthened U.S.-Russia relations was highlighted, with both sides seeing significant economic and geopolitical benefits to ending the war.
Beyond Ukraine, Trump and Putin also touched on pressing global security concerns, particularly the situation in the Middle East. They reportedly agreed on the need to curb the spread of strategic weapons and reinforced their stance that Iran must never be in a position to threaten Israel.
As negotiations gain momentum, U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff has described recent diplomatic efforts as highly encouraging. His recent discussions with Putin in Moscow, coupled with talks led by U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Saudi Arabia, have brought both sides significantly closer to a resolution.
Ukraine, for its part, has signaled its willingness to participate, agreeing to a 30-day ceasefire, which will take effect upon final Russian approval. The agreement, which could be extended through mutual consent, has been characterized as a crucial “step toward restoring durable peace for Ukraine.”
