UFC Fighter Weighs In On Speech Controversy

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker is facing criticism and backlash over his commencement speech at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. While addressing the male and female graduates, Butker shared his traditional Christian beliefs about marriage and gender roles. These comments have sparked a heated debate, with some applauding Butker for standing by his values while others claim his remarks are offensive, homophobic, and misogynistic. Amidst this controversy, UFC fighter Sean Strickland took to social media to call out the National Football League (NFL) for not standing up for Butker and his freedom of speech.

Strickland, known for his bold opinions and unfiltered expression, took to his X account to criticize the NFL for their perceived lack of support for Butker. “When did the NFL become such spineless cowards?” Strickland began, questioning the league’s stance on Butker’s beliefs. He went on to state, “MAN + WOMAN = MARRIAGE. Nothing else. Text, history and tradition… It’s that simple.” Strickland continued, “Saying that makes you a weak man. They want you to say that… Have beliefs.”

The controversy began after Butker’s commencement speech on May 11, where he urged the male graduates to embrace their masculinity and the female graduates to not forsake family life for their careers. Butker, a Super Bowl winner with the Kansas City Chiefs, shared how his wife’s decision to become a homemaker has greatly contributed to his success. These comments have been met with criticism, with some accusing Butker of perpetuating stereotypes and outdated gender roles.

In response to Strickland’s posts on X, many users agreed with his sentiments. One user commented, “Institution of marriage was predicated on having kids and two dudes can’t do that.” Another user added, “what we are against is teaching it to kindergarteners and life-altering procedures/medication to under 18-year-olds.” Strickland replied, “100 percent.”

However, not everyone has been supportive of Butker’s comments. The NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, Jonathan Beane, issued a statement criticizing Butker’s remarks. “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger,” Beane said.

Butker has faced further backlash on social media, with many accusing him of being offensive, homophobic, and misogynistic. One Twitter user wrote, “Dear Harrison Butker: Women aren’t here for your pleasure. We don’t exist solely to nurture and care for men and children. We’re people, with our own dreams, goals, and aspirations. Stop treating us like we’re less than you.” Another user accused Butker of spreading “hate and homophobia” through his speech.

Despite the criticism and support, one thing is clear: Butker’s comments have sparked a debate about traditional Christian values and their place in modern society. While some argue that traditional gender roles and marriage are outdated and harmful, others believe that these values are still relevant and should not be silenced.
