US Catholic Cardinals Speak Out
On its surface, the statement issued by Cardinals Cupich, McElroy, and Tobin might seem like a lofty call for peace and dignity in foreign policy. But when you strip away the carefully polished language, what emerges is not a spiritual message—but a politically charged rebuke, thinly veiled in clerical robes. These three U.S. Catholic Cardinals, all prominent voices within the more progressive wing of the Church hierarchy, chose this moment to criticize President Trump’s policies on Venezuela, Ukraine, and even Greenland—of all places. And they did so with no apparent concern for the real, ongoing suffering of their own American congregations.
From Pope Leo XIV’s Address to Members of the Diplomatic Corps Accredited to the Holy See:
“In our time, the weakness of multilateralism is a particular cause for concern at the international level. A diplomacy that promotes dialogue and seeks consensus among all parties is…— Cardinal Cupich (@CardinalBCupich) January 9, 2026
Let’s take a closer look at what they said. Their statement, released with ceremonial solemnity, laments the “use of military force” and defends the “sovereign rights of nations.” But the irony is staggering. Where was this chorus of moral clarity when America’s own borders were systematically violated, when cartels trafficked vulnerable children across dangerous terrain, and when hundreds of thousands of those children went missing—many likely subjected to unspeakable horrors?
Not a word.
Likewise, when Catholic pro-life activists were arrested by heavily armed agents for peacefully demonstrating at abortion clinics, and when families were coerced, silenced, and cast out for refusing vaccines or resisting radical school curriculums, the cardinals said… nothing.
Suddenly, they’ve found their voice—when they can use it to denounce Trump.
Their statement speaks of valuing “religious liberty” and “human dignity,” yet they ignored the indignity endured by American Catholics under the Biden administration. They stayed silent as Catholics were targeted for their faith. Silent as citizens were punished for living in accordance with conscience. And silent as Americans suffered economically and spiritually through policies that eroded their communities and moral values.

Even more troubling is the selectiveness of their outrage. They invoke Catholic teaching on peace, but in a world stained by real evil, peace requires courage. It requires confronting injustice and protecting the vulnerable—not issuing lofty condemnations from a comfortable distance.
What we’re witnessing isn’t the prophetic voice of the Church. It’s the politicized gasp of an aging class of clerics whose moral compass seems increasingly aligned with secular ideology rather than the Gospel.
The cardinals may have issued a statement. But a growing number of faithful Catholics are issuing one, too—with their lives, their prayers, and their votes.
