Witness Describes New Hampshire Shooting
A wedding is supposed to be one of life’s sacred milestones — a celebration of love, unity, and peace. But on a Saturday evening in New Hampshire, that sense of joy was shattered by an eruption of senseless violence that left one man dead, two others wounded, and a community stunned.
The gunfire broke out during a wedding reception at the Sky Meadow Country Club in Nashua. Guests had gathered to celebrate a union — a family coming together — when the unthinkable happened.
A witness, Tom Bartelson of Pepperell, Massachusetts, recounted to the Associated Press the horrific moment chaos erupted: “Getting together for a dance for the bride and groom and then all chaos went off.”
According to Bartelson, the shooter — later identified by authorities as 23-year-old Hunter Nadeau — shouted disturbing phrases amid the attack. “The children are safe,” and “Free Palestine,” he reportedly yelled before opening fire. Bartelson said Nadeau seemed to be targeting someone specifically, although that has not been confirmed by investigators.
Six gunshots rang out, prompting guests to duck, scramble, and hide wherever they could. Moments before, they had been celebrating; now they were seeking shelter in a scene more reminiscent of a war zone than a wedding.
When the dust settled, 59-year-old Steven DeCesare lay dead. Two other adults had been wounded. Authorities have not yet released their names or provided updates on their conditions. The shooter, however, did not flee. He was detained at the scene and taken into custody.
The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office announced Nadeau has been charged with one count of second-degree murder. More charges are expected, particularly as investigators continue reviewing evidence related to the additional victims. While the shooter’s motive remains officially undetermined, the chilling rhetoric heard by witnesses has already raised deep concerns about politically motivated violence surfacing in deeply personal spaces.
What makes this tragedy even more disorienting is the randomness. Law enforcement has stated there is no known connection between Nadeau and DeCesare. A man shows up to a wedding he wasn’t invited to, makes ideological declarations, then opens fire. The implications are as disturbing as they are unclear.
Nadeau is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at the Ninth Circuit Court in Nashua. As officials continue their investigation, many are left with one resounding question: how did a joyous celebration of life descend into a moment of such irreversible loss?
