ABC Bringing Back Tim Allen
After a six-year hiatus from ABC, Tim Allen is set to return to the network for a brand-new comedy pilot. The 70-year-old actor/comedian took to social media on Thursday to announce the news, stating that ABC has ordered a pilot for a show titled “Shifting Gears.” This project marks his return to ABC since the sudden cancellation of his hit sitcom “Last Man Standing” in 2017.
According to a report by Variety magazine, Allen will not only star in the show but will also serve as an executive producer. The pilot, currently with the working title “Shifting Gears,” will feature Allen as Matt, a stubborn and widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When his estranged daughter and her teenage children move in with him, the real restoration begins.
This is not the first time Allen has worked with ABC. From 2011 to 2017, he starred in the sitcom “Last Man Standing,” playing a conservative father in a female-dominated household. The show was a ratings success and gained a loyal fan base, making its sudden cancellation in 2017 a surprise to many. However, the series found a new home on Fox in 2018 and ran until 2021.
Before his time on “Last Man Standing,” Allen achieved mainstream success with his role as Tim “The Toolman” Taylor on the ABC sitcom “Home Improvement” from 1991 to 1999. The show followed the daily challenges of Tim Taylor, a television show host raising three mischievous boys with help from his co-host, wife, and eccentric neighbor.

Allen’s most recent project for the Disney-backed network was the spinoff series “The Santa Clauses” for the streaming service Disney+. This series, in which he stars and executive produces, is a spinoff of the popular Christmas movie “The Santa Clause” and its sequels. In the movie, Allen portrays Scott Calvin, a man who accidentally becomes Santa Claus.
Fans of the actor are excited to see him return to ABC and are eagerly anticipating the pilot for “Shifting Gears.” This announcement also comes at a time when ABC is looking to revamp its comedy lineup, with other comedy pilots in development as well.
Aside from his work in entertainment, Allen is known for his love of cars and has dabbled in racing and car restoration. His passion for this hobby is reflected in his character in “Shifting Gears,” adding a personal touch to the project.
With his successful track record in television and comedy, the return of Tim Allen to ABC is highly anticipated. Fans are hopeful that the pilot for “Shifting Gears” will be picked up for a full series, and with Allen’s star power and loyal fan base, it is likely to be a hit. More updates on the project are expected to come, and viewers can’t wait to see what Allen has in store for them with this new comedy pilot for ABC.
