MSM Comments On Report After Biden Speech
With the State of the Union address behind him, President Biden’s approval rating remains relatively steady, according to recent polls.
Despite the high-energy and touted delivery of his speech, the incumbent did not see any improvement in his approval ratings. As the nation grapples with multiple crises, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and economic downturn, the lack of a post-speech boost could be a cause for concern for the Biden administration.
A new Yahoo News/YouGov poll released Tuesday showed that Biden’s approval rating fell from 40 percent before the State of the Union to 39 percent. This slight decrease is within the margin of error, indicating no significant change. Furthermore, in a head-to-head matchup against former President Trump, the two are now statistically tied with Trump at 46 percent and Biden at 44 percent. This is a similar trend to the previous poll, where they were also tied.
While the State of the Union address was seen as a significant opportunity for President Biden to make a strong impression and show he is fit for another four years in office, less than 30 percent of respondents in the poll believe he is capable enough for a second term. This number has not changed from the previous survey. Additionally, more than half of Americans perceive the president as being mostly passive in his role, which also has not changed from the previous poll.
Democrats, on the other hand, praised the State of the Union address for its high energy and perceived it as a way to showcase Biden’s capabilities and readiness for another term. However, these positive sentiments did not seem to translate into an increase in his approval ratings, indicating a potential disconnect between the perception of the speech and its impact on public opinion.
As the president continues to navigate the ongoing pandemic and its economic consequences, his upcoming trip to battleground states could be seen as an opportunity to connect with the American people and boost his approval ratings. This week, he will be traveling to Wisconsin and Michigan, where he will likely focus on promoting his administration’s efforts to combat the pandemic, revive the economy, and pass his infrastructure and social spending proposals.
The recent poll is not the only one showing relatively stable approval ratings for President Biden. FiveThirtyEight’s average of polls currently puts Biden’s approval rating at just over 37 percent, a slight decrease from the week before the State of the Union address.
In comparison, on the day before the speech, ABC News had polled his approval rating at just under 38 percent. These numbers suggest that while there may have been some fluctuations, there has been no significant change in the opinions of Americans regarding the president.
Apart from Biden’s approval ratings, the poll also sheds light on Americans’ perception of his age and activity in his role. While the president, at 81, is the oldest to hold the office, less than 30 percent of respondents believed he was unfit to serve a second term due to his age. However, more than half of Americans viewed him as mostly passive, which could be interpreted as a desire for more visible and active leadership from the White House.
Ultimately, these polls are a reflection of the state of the country and its perception of the current administration. As President Biden continues to face multiple challenges, including a highly polarized political climate, his approval ratings will be closely watched.
While the lack of a post-speech boost may not bode well for the president, it is important to note that his approval ratings have remained relatively stable, indicating that the American people’s opinions might be more impacted by tangible actions rather than rhetoric. As he focuses on his agenda and navigating the ongoing crises, only time will tell how his approval ratings will evolve.
