Colbert Unimpressed With Lovett’s Jokes
On Tuesday, an awkward moment unfolded on “The Late Show” as former Obama speechwriter Jon Lovett delivered a series of anti-Trump fart jokes that failed to impress even the left-leaning host, Stephen Colbert. Lovett, along with his fellow “Pod Save America” hosts Jon Favreau and Tommy Vietor, appeared on Colbert’s program to discuss the upcoming first presidential debate between Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. For the first time in recent history, the debate will occur without a live audience, prompting Colbert to question if jokes would still land without immediate audience feedback.
Addressing Lovett, who has written jokes for politicians before, Colbert asked if he had any advice for Biden. In a planned bit, Lovett pulled out a piece of paper, claiming to have potential zingers ready.
“We passed the largest climate bill in history. You remember climate change, like how you changed the climate in that courtroom when you stunk it up with your farts,” Lovett quipped. The partisan audience chuckled, but Colbert’s lackluster response, “What else do you have?” hinted at his lack of enthusiasm.
This weekend, #Trump congratulated “the late great Hannibal Lecter” during his New Jersey rally speech. This is the first case of someone suffering the effects of methane poisoning from being exposed to his own farts.

Undeterred, Lovett continued, “We’ll secure the border and keep families together, though no promises for you and your wife, Melania, with whom you seem to have a, kind of, hollow, loveless arrangement. She wasn’t even with you in that courtroom when you stunk it up with your farts.”
Lovett appeared to be enjoying a rumor spread by far-left group MeidasTouch, which claimed Trump passed gas during his New York trial. He persisted with his flatulence-themed humor, adding, “I’m bringing down costs. You’re promising to cut taxes for your rich friends. But Donald, if you have to cut their taxes so they’ll want to hang out with you, are they really your friends? Did they even call you after the whole fart thing?”
Colbert, maintaining his composure, asked if Lovett would email these jokes directly to Biden. Lovett responded with a mix of seriousness and sarcasm, “Those are the zingers for you. The zingers that could literally save America; I am sending them right to Joe.”
This isn’t the first time anti-Trump flatulence jokes have made the rounds in liberal media. ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel has taken similar jabs, and liberal actress Bette Midler also made an anti-Trump flatulence joke recently. Midler posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, “This is the first case of someone suffering the effects of methane poisoning from being exposed to his own farts,” in response to comments made at a Trump rally in New Jersey.
