Councilwoman Demands Governor Intervene To Remove Mayor
New York City Councilwoman Tiffany Cabán made bold remarks on Thursday during an interview with CNN’s The Lead, calling for the removal of Mayor Eric Adams in light of his recent indictment on charges related to campaign finance and foreign influence crimes.
Cabán, a Democrat representing Queens, suggested that New York Governor Kathy Hochul should use her authority to remove Adams from office, arguing that the mayor is no longer capable of governing effectively amid the scandal.
“The question really for New Yorkers right now is, can this mayor in this moment govern?” Cabán said. “Can he deliver the critical services that New Yorkers deserve every single day? And we know that he can’t, even before the indictment dropped.”
She emphasized that the issue isn’t just Adams being the first New York City mayor to face a criminal indictment, but also the larger pattern of what she described as “mismanagement and corruption” within his administration.
Cabán pointed to the exodus of high-level officials from Adams’ administration and the overall breakdown in city services as further proof of his inability to lead. While she acknowledged that Adams, like any other individual facing charges, is entitled to due process, she stressed that the city’s pressing needs must take precedence over waiting for the outcome of the legal proceedings.
“This is way too distracting in this moment,” Cabán said, asserting that Adams’ continued presence in office is hindering the government’s ability to function.
When CNN host Jake Tapper directly asked whether Governor Hochul should intervene and remove Adams, Cabán did not hesitate in her response: “Yes. Like I said, this is a moment where it’s very clear that he cannot govern. There is an inability for government to function the way it is.”
Cabán’s comments reflect the growing tensions and concerns within the city’s political landscape, where Adams, once a rising star in Democratic politics, now faces severe scrutiny. His indictment marks an unprecedented moment in New York City history, raising questions about the future of his leadership and the stability of his administration.
Whether Hochul will act on Cabán’s call remains to be seen, but the indictment has already placed enormous pressure on the mayor’s office, leaving many to wonder if Adams can effectively lead New York City through its current challenges while defending himself against serious legal accusations.
