Hollywood Actor Urges His Fans To Boycott
The latest flare-up surrounding J.K. Rowling didn’t come from a policy debate or a legal filing, but from a radio interview—where actor Andrew Garfield added his voice to a growing list of public figures distancing themselves from the “Harry Potter” creator.
Garfield approached the topic cautiously but made his position clear. Without naming Rowling directly, he referred to her as “she that shall remain nameless,” borrowing language from the series itself. The phrasing carried a deliberate edge, signaling both disapproval and an attempt to separate the work from its author. Still, he acknowledged the tension in doing so.
Today’s ruling by the IOC means a welcome return to fair sport for women and girls, but I’ll never forget the scandal of Paris 2024, when people who consider themselves supremely virtuous and progressive publicly cheered on men punching women. pic.twitter.com/qmQCI2Mks5

He admitted that even watching the “Harry Potter” films now carries a degree of controversy, framing it as a question of whether consuming the content indirectly supports positions he disagrees with. His concern centered on the idea that financial success tied to the franchise could, in his view, contribute to causes he described as “inhumane.”
At the same time, he didn’t dismiss the films outright. He pointed to the performances and underlying themes as reasons the series continues to resonate, even as the surrounding debate intensifies.
That balancing act—between appreciation for the work and rejection of the creator’s views—has become a familiar pattern. Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, both closely associated with the original films, have also publicly criticized Rowling’s stance on gender-related issues.
Their responses, like Garfield’s, reflect an effort to carve out space between the cultural impact of the franchise and the ongoing controversy tied to its author.
Rowling, for her part, has not stepped back from the debate. She has continued to speak and act on her views, including supporting legal efforts in the United Kingdom related to the definition of biological sex. A 2025 U.K. Supreme Court ruling aligned with that definition, and she has also commented on international sports policies, including restrictions on transgender women competing in women’s events.
The dispute has extended beyond statements and into professional decisions. Actor John Lithgow reportedly considered withdrawing from his role in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” adaptation amid backlash connected to Rowling, though he ultimately remained attached to the project.
