PETA Requests Company Stop Making Animal Themed Carousels
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) recently called for the elimination of an iconic carnival ride – the carousel. In a letter to Chance Rides, the country’s largest manufacturer of carousels, the extreme animal rights organization slammed the use of animal-themed carousels as “exploitation.” According to PETA, these rides “unintentionally celebrate the exploitation” of animals, which are “thinking, feeling, affectionate, playful, and social beings.”
The letter, addressed to Chance Rides President Dick Chance, urged the company to stop producing carousel figures in animal forms and instead focus on more modern, non-animal designs. PETA president Ingrid Newkirk stated, “Animal-themed carousel sets reinforce the notion that these sentient beings are simply here for our entertainment, rather than individuals with the same capacity to experience fear, pain, joy, and love as any of us.”
PETA believes that teaching children to have respect and compassion for all living beings can help create a more just and merciful world. They argue that children learn through play, and by using animal figures on carousels, children are being taught that it is acceptable to exploit and use animals for entertainment.
Chance Rides has been in the business of manufacturing carousels since 1961, and their website describes the joy and wonder that these rides provide for people of all ages. They state that in a world that often moves too fast, the carousel allows people to experience pure wonder and forget their inhibitions. The company takes pride in its craftsmanship, creating unique and beautiful carousels in various sizes and themes.

The company has yet to publicly respond to PETA’s request to change their designs, but it is clear that they have a passion for creating animal-themed carousels. Chance Rides has a wide range of designs, from traditional horses to more whimsical creatures like unicorns and dragons. These carousels are beloved by families and have been a staple at fairs and amusement parks for decades.
It is not just Chance Rides that will be affected by PETA’s request. There are many other manufacturers that produce animal-themed carousels, and if PETA gets their way, they may also have to change their designs. This could have a significant impact on the carnival and amusement park industry, as many of these rides are popular with children and families.
Some may argue that PETA is taking its cause too far by trying to eliminate something as innocent as a carousel. However, PETA sees this as a step towards creating a more humane and compassionate society. They believe that by promoting non-animal-themed carousels, they are making a statement about the value of all living beings.
Others may argue that PETA’s request is unrealistic and would remove a beloved childhood experience. The nostalgia and joy that come with riding a carousel, especially one with beautifully crafted animal figures, cannot be replicated with carousels shaped like cars or airplanes. Children have been riding animal-themed carousels for generations, and some may argue that it is a tradition that should be preserved.
In conclusion, PETA’s call for the elimination of animal-themed carousels has sparked a debate about the use of animals for entertainment. While some may see this as a noble effort to promote compassion and respect for animals, others may view it as a threat to a beloved childhood experience. As of now, Chance Rides has not publicly responded to PETA’s request, but it remains to be seen how this issue will be resolved.
