Trump Responds To Gavin Newsom’s Interview With Bill Maher
The reaction came fast and blunt. President Donald Trump took aim at comedian Bill Maher over his recent interview with California Governor Gavin Newsom, arguing that the longtime host failed to challenge the governor in any meaningful way.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump described Maher as “weak and ineffective,” claiming the interview allowed Newsom to control the narrative. He accused the governor of painting an overly positive picture of California while, in Trump’s telling, the state is facing serious problems, including population decline and economic strain.
Trump’s criticism hinges on a specific moment: his view that Maher let Newsom speak at length without pressing hard enough on issues like high living costs and infrastructure concerns.
That’s notable because Maher did raise several of those points during the interview. He questioned gas prices, rent levels, and even took a shot at the state’s long-troubled high-speed rail project, telling Newsom directly, “Gavin, you got to get rid of the train.”

Even so, Trump’s argument isn’t that the topics weren’t mentioned—it’s that the pushback didn’t land. From his perspective, Newsom was able to sidestep criticism and maintain a favorable portrayal of his administration.
The criticism didn’t stop at the interview itself. Trump also took a personal swipe at Maher, recounting a prior meeting at the White House and portraying the comedian as uneasy and unimpressive in that setting. The remarks added a personal edge to what might otherwise have been framed purely as media critique.
Maher, for his part, occupies an unusual space in the current media landscape. Though widely known for liberal viewpoints, he has repeatedly criticized aspects of Democratic governance in California, particularly around taxes and regulation. That tension was visible in the interview, even if observers disagree on how forcefully it was expressed.
Newsom’s camp didn’t ignore the moment either. His social media account responded with a jab of its own, suggesting the interview prompted an overreaction from Trump.
