Dog Takes Center Stage At Convention
Let’s take a delightful detour from the usual political drama and focus on an unexpected star at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Amidst the speeches from Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, and other conservative heavyweights, the true sensation this year is none other than a chubby bulldog named Babydog.
Babydog, the beloved pet of West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, has taken the internet by storm with her relaxed and charming presence.
During Governor Justice’s speech, Babydog lounged contentedly on a black leather armchair, seemingly unbothered by the hundreds of politicians and attendees around her. This viral moment has captured hearts and attention far beyond the convention hall.
Governor Justice made sure to mention his four-legged friend in his remarks, bringing a touch of humor and warmth to the event. He said, “Babydog has got a prediction for everybody here. Babydog says that we will retain the House, the majority in the House, we are going to flip the United States Senate and overwhelmingly we are going to elect Donald J. Trump and J.D. Vance in November.” With a confident flair, he added that Babydog is sure of her predictions because “we’re worth it.”
Indiana Congressman Jim Banks also gave a nod to Babydog, saying, “I don’t know about you, but thank God Babydog is a Republican.” This playful comment further solidified Babydog’s status as a convention favorite.
Born in 2019, Babydog has quickly become a fan favorite, not just in West Virginia but now on a national stage. She gained popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic when Governor Justice used the slogan “Do It for Babydog” to encourage West Virginians to enter a vaccination lottery. Her endearing presence has even been immortalized on a mural at the state capitol.
The New York Times reported that Babydog’s appearance at the RNC generated an energy typically reserved for figures like former President Donald Trump. As she was brought onstage, the crowd erupted into chants of “Babydog! Babydog!” Her calm demeanor and lovable appearance have clearly struck a chord with attendees and viewers alike.
Governor Justice, who also owns two Boston Terriers named Lucy and Ellie, has made Babydog a regular part of his public appearances.
According to the West Virginia Governor’s website, “Whether it be special appearances on the biggest of stages, like the Governor’s State of the State address, or simply meeting people and shaking paws in her travels, Babydog always makes everyone smile everywhere that she and the Governor go.”
