Omar Office Reveals Bizarre Request To Alter Birth Year
In May 2019, the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library was contacted by Rep. Ilhan Omar’s congressional office, according to staff emails. Her listed birth year was requested to be altered from 1981 to 1982 by them. This request came just months after a viral video questioned her age. The change impacts her claim of becoming a citizen as a minor in 2000.
The library director confirmed the request in writing. “On May 17, 2019, Library staff were informed by Rep. Omar’s congressional staff that her birth year was incorrect and requested that we change it to 1982,” the director wrote. The director also noted that Omar’s office was trying to update the date on other sites like Wikipedia. “Rep. Omar’s congressional staff are working with Wikipedia and with the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress and other sources to correct her birth year on those sites,” the director added.
NEW from the @nypost: Ilhan Omar’s congressional staff got her official birth year changed from 1981 to 1982 in May 2019, months after she took office.
Why does one year matter? She says she became a citizen through her father at 17, in 2000.
Born in 1981, she’d have been 18 that whole year and one year is the difference between her citizenship story working and not.
“For derivative citizenship, two things have to be true — one, her father had to naturalize; and two, she still had to be a minor.”
That one year matters a lot.

For years, the 1981 date appeared in library records and media reports. This included her time in the Minnesota House. RedState reported that the request happened shortly after a political opponent’s video went viral. The video questioned whether she had accurately stated her age. The director explained that the original 1981 entry had no documentation. It was added because the date was “widely available—in Wikipedia and the Biographical Directory,” according to New York Post.
As of May 24, 2019, the birth year had not been corrected on the two major sites. Breitbart noted that the library director said the change was still pending. The original date of October 4, 1981, would mean she turned 18 in October 1999. If she was born in 1982, she would have remained 17 until October 2000.
JUST IN: Federal agents have SUBPOENAED Somali Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) relatives as the DOJ RAMPS up their criminal probe into her family’s immigration history for fraud and false statements, according to New York Times.
Investigators issued grand jury subpoenas to Omar’s sister Sahra Noor and at least one other relative while digging through records on whether her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, LIED or OMITTED information on immigration forms before becoming a U.S. citizen.
On Monday, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) raided Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C. home and hauled out boxes of documents after a federal judge signed a court-approved warrant.

According to reports, she attained U.S. citizenship in 2000 via her father. “I became a citizen actually before I turned 18,” Omar told the Intercept in September 2018. Eligibility to derive citizenship through a parent requires meeting legal rules before turning 18. Daily Wire reported that a birth year of 1981 would mean she was 18 or 19 in 2000. This would raise questions about her account of becoming a citizen as a minor.
A 2023 search for any record of her father’s naturalization found nothing. AJ Kern, who ran against Omar in the 2022 primary, requested this information during the campaign. Daily Wire stated that a year later, the search failed to locate proof that he had been naturalized. Critics contend that if she is one year older, she could not have legally become a citizen in 2000.

The alteration of her birth year could offer a clue about what federal agents sought. New York Post reported this link after a raid on her DC home. The library director confirmed the staff request while the office worked to fix other records. The director wrote that the 1981 date had been used without documentation. Now, the office is trying to ensure the 1982 date appears everywhere.
The library’s records show the original entry lacked proof. The director noted the office was working on Wikipedia and the Biographical Directory. As of late May 2019, those sites still showed the old year. The facts show a clear effort to update the official record. The question remains whether the 1982 date is the true year or a fix to match her story.
