Police Comment On Incident At Nashville Perfume Store
A Tennessee couple who attempted to barricade thieves inside a store recently shared their experience and discussed how rising crime in Nashville has affected the local community. Cody and Angela Campbell were shopping at Tanger Outlets in Nashville’s Antioch neighborhood over the weekend when they encountered a robbery at a Perfumania store.
The incident began when four alleged burglars, disguised in hoodies and medical masks, started robbing the store. Angela captured the moment on video, showing bystanders, including Cody, holding the store’s door closed to trap the suspects inside.
Angela recounted the event during an interview with Carley Shimkus on Thursday. She explained that her son was inside the Perfumania store shopping but had left with an employee just as the robbers arrived. ”
Another employee went out the back and locked the door, and they kind of just ran out and were like, ‘we’re being robbed. We’re being robbed,'” she said. Angela and Cody were in a neighboring store when their son alerted them to the situation.
Instinctively, Angela began recording the event, while Cody quickly moved to assist. “Something kicked in, and I walked down there and started helping him hold the door,” Cody recalled. “I think anybody would do it if they had somebody yelling for help.”
The video footage shows the alleged burglars attempting to smash the back door open with a stepladder. When this failed, they tried to break through the wall next to the door. Despite the efforts of the bystanders to keep the door shut, the perpetrators managed to escape before the police arrived. The group held the door for 30 minutes, hoping for police intervention, but the thieves broke through the sheetrock and fled.
“There were probably three different people that called the cops, and we kept waiting and waiting,” Angela stated. “It took 30 minutes, and by that time, the shoplifters were able to break through the sheetrock out the back, and they escaped.”
Cody expressed concern about the impact of such crimes on local shopping habits. He noted that the rising crime could deter people from visiting the area. “This is a really pretty place. It’s got a lot to do, but I don’t want to go back there if that’s what’s going to happen,” he said.
