Schumer Seemingly Makes A Deal With Fetterman

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer did something strange last week. He is publicly begging a maverick lawmaker to stay in his party. According to reports, Schumer made it crystal clear that he wants Sen. John Fetterman to remain a Democrat. The Pennsylvania senator has publicly toyed with leaving the party, and Schumer is worried. He hailed Fetterman as “a very good member of Congress” to quiet the far-left critics.

Schumer told reporters that people in their caucus like him. He stated that members of our caucus hold him in high regard and we operate as a big-tent party. That party can accommodate numerous differing perspectives. This sounds nice, but the private fear is real. Certain Democrats fear Fetterman might defect to the Republican side. That move would make it much harder for them to flip four seats in November.

Here is the twist that catches most people off guard. Senate Majority Leader John Thune is not fighting to keep Fetterman out. He is waiting with open arms. The New York Post reported that Thune told reporters last week, “We would welcome him.” Thune added that he has had conversations with Fetterman about the challenges he faces in his own caucus.

Thune made it clear that many Republicans would be happy to have him. He remarked that many would welcome his entry into the Republican conference, though the final choice rests with him. The GOP knows Fetterman is a centrist maverick. The Washington Examiner notes he is more in line with establishment views than with socialists in the Democratic Party. Fetterman has long denied rumors of a switch, but the door is wide open.

Fetterman is not switching sides lightly. He wrote a May op-ed explaining why he does not fit in with the GOP. He claimed to be strongly pro-choice, pro-weed, pro-LGBT, pro-SNAP, pro-labor, and even pro-rib-eye over bioslop. Those are not typical Republican talking points. But there is one issue where he might walk away from the Democrats. He set a hard line regarding Israel.

Fetterman told the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, that he was proud to stand with the Jewish state. Netanyahu called him a “stellar patriot” who told the truth with no fear. Fetterman responded that he stands proudly with Israel’s vision and its miraculous nature. As a Democratic politician, he also stated that the party’s continued behavior has been disappointing. He claimed he was the only Democrat proud to push back against criticism of Netanyahu.

The condition for leaving is specific and serious. Fetterman said his long-term concern is that the Democratic Party will turn its back on Israel. He stated, “If our party ever becomes, and just makes it official, the anti-Israel party, that’s when I would leave because that’s been a moral clarity for me.” This is not a vague threat. It is a clear boundary drawn in the sand.

For conservative readers, this is a moment to watch closely. A key lawmaker is telling his party that their direction on Israel is unacceptable. He is willing to leave his party to stop it. Schumer wants him to stay, but the GOP is ready to take him.
